How does skin resurfacing with SmartSkin CO2 work?
Using what’s known as fractional laser resurfacing, the SmartSkin CO2 laser can reduce the appearance of pores, wrinkles and sun damage. The laser treats the skin one microscopic portion at a time, before moving on to the next microscopic portion. Each micro column receives just enough laser energy to vaporize the aged skin while also stimulating new collagen growth of surrounding tissue. It’s more than skin resurfacing; it’s deep skin rejuvenation. Immediately following the procedure, your body’s natural healing process kicks in and starts replacing aged tissue cells with new tissue. Over time, this will build up the support structure under your skin resulting in a younger and smoother looking appearance.
How long does the SMARTSKIN™ CO2 LASER procedure take?
The typical treatment time is about 30 minutes and noticeable results are often reported after just one treatment with SmartSkin. What makes SmartSkin CO2 unique from other skin resurfacing procedures?
Carbon dioxide lasers have been used for many years for effective skin resurfacing procedures. Traditional CO2 lasers are sufficient, but come with harsh side effects. These treatments would remove deep, unwanted wrinkles, but would come with a long recovery period after the procedure and oftentimes complications would arise. What to expect during treatment
The procedure can be performed in your doctor’s office or an outpatient facility. A local anesthetic is typically enough of a numbing agent, unless a particularly large area is being treated. Goggles may be required for eye protection. The doctor will then pass the laser across the parts of the face that need treatment, with the number of passes determined by the thickness of the skin and the extent of the damage.

Typically, only one treatment may be needed for desired results. However, since this treatment is customizable and are tailor to your specific cosmetic expectations and downtime needs, you can opt for two or three “lighter” sessions. What should I expect after SMARTSKIN™ CO2 LASER treatment?
Immediately after the treatment, your skin may feel warm and appear to be sunburned. You may also experience some swelling, which is completely normal. Your body naturally starts working by replacing the aged skin cells with new ones. After a few days to a week, you will notice healthier-looking skin and a more even complexion. Over time, collagen will regenerate and restore the supporting structure of your skin, giving you the smooth skin you are looking for.
